OGPU, CHEKA, NKVD, MGB and Border Troop Red Army, Soviet Union 1918-1991
The United State Political Directorate under the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR (OGPU under the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR) is a special state security agency of the USSR. This structure was formed on the basis of the GPU under the NKVD of the RSFSR by the decree of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR of November 15, 1923, after the establishment of the USSR in 1922 - a union of four Soviet republics. In 1934, the OGPU became part of the NKVD of the USSR (formed from the NKVD of the RSFSR) as the Main Directorate of State Security (GUGB)
The People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (NKVD USSR, Narkomvnudel) is the central body of state administration of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics for combating crime and maintaining public order, and in 1934-1943 (with a break from February 3 to July 20, 1941) also for ensuring the state security of the country.
The Narkomvnudel was formed by the decree of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR on July 10, 1934[1]. The United State Political Directorate of the USSR, renamed the Main Directorate of State Security (GUGB), became part of the NKVD USSR. The NKVD of the USSR was responsible for public utilities and construction, other branches of industry, as well as political investigation and the right to issue sentences in an extrajudicial manner (OSO), the penal system, foreign intelligence, border and internal troops, and counterintelligence in the army.
The NKVD of the Soviet Union was later transformed into the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1946.
The People's Commissariat for State Security of the USSR (NKGB USSR) and the Ministry of State Security of the USSR (MGB USSR) were the central bodies of state power of the USSR that were responsible for issues of state security in February–July 1941 and in 1943–1953. Along with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR, the Ministry of State Security of the USSR was a union-republic ministry.
